We’re big fans of all things geek here at Rogue Planet, and we’re also big fans of booze. It’s the magic glue that binds our operation and as summer is coming to a close, we figured you might need a vacation from your vacation. So here are five geek-themed cocktails for you to try out at your next party:
1. The Moaning Myrtle:
I’ll let a ghost haunt my bathroom any day if it produces a delicious champagne martini like the Moaning Myrtle.
- 2 ounces champagne
- 1 ounce vodka
- 2 ounces white grape juice
- Purple sugar
- Optional (but highly encouraged) dry ice
To get into the spirit(s) make sure to read: 5 Haunted Bathrooms That Might Make You Shit Your Pants before you embark on this shaken, not stirred geektail.
Coat the rim of a martini glass with the purple sugar, using a little bit of the grape juice as a binding agent. Then add the white grape juice and vodka to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Guess what the next step is? Yep, shake it until chilled. Then pour the dizzy contents into the martini glass adding the champagne on top. Drop in a piece or two of dried ice for the complete haunting effect! Enjoy.
2. The Giggling Yoda
I hope this tastes better than the swamps of Dagobah because that’s sure what this looks like, and it seems most people agree.
Just a warning, you’ll need a blender for this frothy concoction:
- 1 oz. Vodka
- 1 Can of Ginger Ale
- 1/2 a Pear (cored and peeled)
- 5-6 Green Grapes
- 2 Tsp Lime Juice
- Sprig of Mint
Puree your pear, grapes, lime juice, and mint in your trusty blending machine. Add your vodka to a martini glass, we recommend a chilled one for this one, and then add your pureed goo to the glass. Top off the mixture with ginger ale and drink for infinite wisdom.
Here’s a bonus, you can even watch this drunk lady from The Lounge Geeks make this concoction with a heap of Vodka.
3. The Rainbow Road
Nintendo will always reign supreme in the hearts of many ’80s children. Which is why I bring you this colorful stack of booze from the folks over at The Drunken Moogle.
- 4 oz. Orange juice
- 1/2 oz. Gin
- 1/3 oz. Grenadine
- 1/3 oz. Rum
- 3 oz. Vodka
- 2 splashes of Blue Curacao
Mix up your gin and juice and pour into a glass. Then you’re going to stir your rum and grenadine together and slowly pour down the side of the glass so the red mixture settles on the bottom. Here comes the unsettling part, for me at least. Mix up your blue curacao and vodka and layer it on top of the orange juice. The top layer will be blue, and the immediate portion under it should be a slight green. Voila, rainbow road in a glass.
The very unfortunate part of this drink is that it contains Blue Curacao, which is basically a bottled hangover. I’m including this drink on the list mainly for its aesthetic properties, not its taste. In all honesty, it’s the fancy drink that Mario might serve Bowser in an epic sugary revenge.
This drink boldly goes where no drink has gone before. We caution those who dare to drink this that death may be imminent. DRINK AT YOUR OWN RISK:
The following recipe makes three drinks that will test the fate of your guests.
- 2 medium blood oranges
- 1 lemon
- 1 lime
- 1 oz. simple syrup
- 3 oz. vodka
- Sugar (for rim)
- 1 pinch of Fleur de Sal
To make your rim, pour your sugar and a sprinkling of Fleur de Sal on a plate then dip rim of your glass in a wee bit of lime juice and then your salty sweet mixture. Juice up all your citrus (blood oranges, lemon, and lime) and remember that pulp is your friend in this case. Fill up your shaker with ice (halfway up is good), vodka, your citrus juice, and simple syrup. Shake, shake, shake.
This is one drink that is sure to be as deadly as it is beautiful.
5. The Groot Beer Float:
Guardians of the Galaxy took over our theaters, hearts, and popular culture and now it’s set on taking over your bar too. Here is another tasty treat from The Drunken Moogle:
- 1.5 oz Bourbon
- 1 large scoop Pistachio Ice Cream (or gelato)
- Root Beer
Take a hearty scoop of the pistachio ice cream and lob it into a tall glass, chilled if you’re smart. Take a shot of bourbon and pour it over the top, and finish by filling up the glass with your root beer of choice. We’re guessing if you use the alcoholic root beer this drink will have some serious bark.
