We’ve seen a few rumors and reports about which characters will assemble with who in Marvel Studios upcoming Captain America: Civil War. These teams were recently confirmed by a batch of promo images that feature each team rallied behind their respective leaders, as well as a group image showcasing some of the action we might see between these two teams of Avengers.
Let’s look at the sides that will develop in the film, starting with Team Cap:
Standing alongside Cap (Chris Evans) We have Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp), Falcon w/ Redwing (Anthony Mackie), and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). This team is basically full of franchise characters while ading Hawkeye and Ant-Man to the mix, which makes for a pretty well rounded team.
Now for Team Shellhead, which has a few more heavy hitters:
Standing with Iron Man is War Machine (Don Cheadle), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Vision (Paul Bettany). That’s a pretty powerful team when stacked up against Team Cap, and we still don’t know for sure where newcomer Spider-Man (Tom Holland) fits into all of this.
The third entry in the Captain America franchise will be adapting Marvel’s mega event Civil War, which saw the Marvel Universe split down the middle due to the Superhero Registration Act. The SRA hoped to bring any and all costumed heroes under the purview of SHIELD and the government, which rubbed more than a few heroes the wrong way.
In the comics Iron Man backed the SRA, which pit him against Captain America, who saw it as an affront to civil liberties and rallied against the SRA. Each side gathered thier own team of heroes and saw many battles between the two. The film’s synopsis reveals that Captain america: Civil War will see a very similar storyline adapted for the big screen:
“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
The “new and nefarious villain” is most likely Daniel Brühl, who is rumored to be playing iconic Cap villain Baron Zemo, though we haven’t seen any material featuring his character as of yet. We also don’t know how he fits into the larger Civil War adaptation, as the character didn’t feature in the comic storyline at all.
These promo images really don’t reveal all that much to us, but it certainly continues to build the excitement for this film, which almost feels bigger than even the last two Avengers films.
What are you most excited to see in Civil War? The new characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man? Avenger vs Avenger? Whose side are you on?
