OK Go’s new music video takes zero gravity to the next level

OK Go, the band known for their innovative music videos made gravitational waves last week when they released the new video for their song, “Upside Down & Inside Out.”

The resulting product was shot in a single take and is unique for it’s zero-gravity properties, and no, they didn’t have the luxury to shoot this in the International Space Station. The band partnered with Russian airlines S7 to film the sequence on a series of parabolical flights and utilized two of their air hostesses, who happen to be trained aerial acrobats, as well.

Since this scenario only allows for less than 30-seconds of near weightlessness at a time, the total shot was over 45 minutes long, with the “boring” parts cut out to achieve pure “zero-g” bliss. Coupled with colorful balls, piñatas, paint-filled balloons, and mini disco balls, the resulting video is nothing short of a trip.

Bashing piñatas while floating inside a plane might sound like the coolest Fiesta ever, and it probably was, but every experience has its price. Reduced gravity aircraft are also affectionately known as “Vomit Comets”, and as the name implies, over the course of 21 flights, they recorded a total of 58 puking incidents among the team.

It’s advised that you read about the band’s making of the video here.

Then, take a look at the Nerdist interview with OK Go frontman Damian Kulash, who also co-directed the film with his sister Trish Sie.

What do you think of the final product? Let us know what your favorite space-themed music video is in the comments below. It’s anything by our favorite Starman, David Bowie, right? Me too, but this video is pretty, pretty, pretty good on its own.
